Japan Rail Pass

The Japan Rail Pass issued by the JR Group is a very economical and convenient train pass for travelers. The Rail Pass allows unlimited use of JR trains (with the exception of the newest super-express Shinkansen train, the “Nozomi”), as well as JR-affiliated buses and ferries. Since the Japan Rail Pass is intended mainly, with some exceptions, for foreign tourists who will stay in Japan for a short period for sightseeing, a Japan Rail Pass Exchange Order must first be purchased in your or another country before coming to Japan. The Exchange Order is then exchanged for your Japan Rail Pass after you enter Japan.

Only foreign travelers with “temporary visitor” entry status stamped in their passports can purchase the Japan Rail Pass. After you arrive in Japan, go to one of the authorized JR Ticket Offices or Travel Service Centers and exchange your Exchange Order for the Japan Rail Pass. Although there is some inconvenience in that the purchase and exchange of the Exchange Order must be taken care of by the user himself/herself, the Japan Rail Pass is a very attractive offer for those who wish to travel within Japan using JR transportation.
