+ Outline

In “Smoky Mountain”, Asia's largest slum, in the Philippines, young people earn a living by garbage gathering. However, at the same time, those children are known as performers flourishing internationally.Through the songs and dances of the indigenous tribes in the Philippines, they learned the importance of maintaining their national identity, rich environment and culture. The group aims to inherit Philippine culture and tradition and also trigger the awareness of environmental collapse through their performance. On this stage, they will present an original program on the theme of future eco-communities of our planet.

Profile

Mga Anak ni Inang Daidgig, Children of Mother Earth, is an environmental group of young people born and raised in Smoky Mountain, the infamous garbage dump in the city of Manila. In 1993, Fr. Benigno P. Beltran, SVD, parish priest of the Risen Christ in Smokey Mountain thought of creating a group that will move the conscience of people regarding environmental degradation and the possible ecological disasters resulting from ravaging the planet. He started with “Mga Lingkod ni Inang Daigdig”(later the name was changed to “Mga Anak ni Inang Daidgig”) a group of young children performing stage drama, songs and interpretative dances that depict the importance of taking care of the environment. These children went through auditions and rigid training. The primary mission of the group was to share ideas and insights on saving Mother Earth with other youth. They strongly believed that today's youth should feel responsible for taking care of this world for it is only one they have. The group also aimed to trigger the awareness of the people regarding irresponsible garbage disposal, the harsh effects of pollution and the resulting environmental collapse and ecological imbalance. The group invited guest professional instructors to train them in drama and stage skills. Environmental seminars and acting workshops were also given to boost the knowledge and skills of the members in stage performance. As a result, they received enthusiastic applause in their first concert. Later, Ramon Obsan from the Ramon Obsan Folkloric Group became their stage manager and the group started full-fledged stage career. On this stage, they will present an original program on the theme of future eco-communities of our planet.
